For a space startup, choose the lightest system that keeps engineering decisions connected as the team grows. A controlled spreadsheet can be enough at concept stage. Move to a dedicated tool when requirements, interfaces, changes and test evidence start crossing owners or releases. Arc is one candidate for that transition; this is an Arc-authored shortlist, not an independent ranking.
This guide is for a team's first space programme: no inherited requirements estate, a near-term review and a small initial contributor group. For ongoing supplier exchange across programmes, use the small-aerospace-team guide. The broader buyer guide covers platform and procurement gates.
What does our next milestone need?
List the deliverables for the next design review or customer exchange. Identify the authoritative requirement set, who approves it, how subsystems are allocated and which verification claims need evidence. Do not buy a large ALM estate for hypothetical future processes. Equally, do not wait until a review pack requires weeks of reconciling copied sheets.
A practical shortlist
Include Trace.Space and Stell in the same trial when their documented traceability and verification workflows fit the programme. These are vendor claims, so test the required evidence controls.
- Spreadsheet or controlled document: lowest setup cost for a small, stable and single-owner set.
- Arc: connected space requirements, interfaces, review and verification when parallel engineering starts.
- Flow Engineering: a connected hardware systems graph with branches and agents. Its Basic plan targets smaller teams and links a free trial. Confirm limits, integration status and evidence controls. Sources checked 1 October 2026.
- ECLIPSE Suite: RVM covers requirements and verification, with other modules for documents and formal reviews. The Start-Up tier lists 5–49 users and vendor hosting. Consider it when the customer review environment or document process makes it relevant. Sources checked 1 October 2026.
- ReqView: documented requirements, risks and test links with Git or SVN versioning; evaluate when a document-oriented workflow suits the team.
- Jama Connect: strong candidate when structured stakeholder review is central.
- DOORS, Polarion or Codebeamer: evaluate when a customer contract or enterprise lifecycle estate requires their specific controls.
For a direct shortlist decision, the Arc vs Flow Engineering comparison applies the same payload-change evaluation to both products and covers pricing, access and migration boundaries.
The Arc vs ECLIPSE Suite comparison covers module scope, quotation-based pricing and a shared supplier handover evaluation.
Run a startup-sized pilot
Use a synthetic 6U satellite payload with a changed downlink duty cycle. Ask the payload owner to propose the change, the bus owner to inspect power and thermal interfaces, and the test lead to update verification. Capture whether each person can find the current decision without a systems engineer manually joining files. Export the resulting set; a startup cannot afford a data trap at its next contract.
How do we evaluate adoption and exit?
Check time spent maintaining the model, training new engineers, preparing a customer package and repairing imports. Include security and deployment constraints only if the programme actually has them. A tool's future capability is less valuable than current users entering reliable records. Keep the source workbook read-only during a migration trial.
Where does Arc fit?
Arc's connected programme model and reviewable branch changes target the point when subsystem decisions stop fitting in one sheet. Its supported direct import scope is CSV, Word, Jira, Git and Confluence; confirm the startup's actual export route and have engineers approve the imported graph.
Frequently asked questions
Should a new space startup buy enterprise ALM immediately?
Only if a contract or existing estate requires it. Start with the smallest controlled workflow that meets the next real milestone.
When is a spreadsheet no longer enough?
When parallel changes, interfaces or evidence across owners make the authoritative state hard to prove.
What should the pilot show?
A cross-subsystem change from proposal through review and verification, plus a usable export and realistic contributor effort.
Evaluate these programme criteria in Arc
Arc connects requirements, systems and interfaces, controls branch, review and merge, and links verification evidence to the relevant requirements and configurations. Evaluate one representative work package against this guide’s criteria.
