Use info@msl-ltd.com or 0191 3726942 to discuss the required test and sample arrangements.
Laboratory and off-site allocation
Chemical, corrosion, mechanical and metallurgical tests for metals and weldments are allocated to GAT. Commercial and industrial premises and sites, code C&I, cover alloy categorisation by positive material identification only.

Testing capabilities

Optical emission chemical analysis

At GAT, in-house method TEINST 19 uses optical emission spectrometry. The stainless-steel element list is C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Mo, Ni, Cu, Al, V, Nb, Co and W. The separate low-alloy carbon-steel list is C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Mo, Ni, Cu, Al, V, Nb and B.

Positive material identification

In-house method TEINST 20 uses an XRF Niton X1.2 analyser for alloy categorisation of steel, stainless steel, nickel, titanium, copper and aluminium alloys. This entry is allocated to GAT and off-site C&I. Other laboratory methods are not allocated to C&I by this schedule.

Corrosion testing

At GAT, stainless-steel intergranular susceptibility uses ASTM A262-15(2021) Method B and stainless-steel pitting resistance uses ASTM G48-25 Method A. Nickel-alloy intergranular susceptibility uses ASTM G28:2024 Method A.

Bend testing

The GAT bend entry lists BS EN ISO 7438:2020, ASTM E290-22 and ASTM A370-26. Confirm the material, specimen and required method.

Hardness testing

At GAT, Brinell HB 10/3000 uses BS EN ISO 6506-1:2014 and ASTM E10-23. Rockwell C uses BS EN ISO 6508-1:2023 and ASTM E18-25. Vickers HV10 uses BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 and ASTM E92-23. Micro or low-force Vickers HV0.3, HV0.5 and HV1.0 uses BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 and ASTM E384-22.

Charpy and Izod impact testing

The GAT Charpy entry covers -80°C to ambient under ASTM E23-25, ASTM A370-26 and BS EN ISO 148-1:2016. Izod is separately listed to BS 131-1:1961 (2007). No lower Charpy temperature is inferred.

Ambient tensile testing

At GAT, ambient tensile testing covers forces from 5 kN to 1200 kN under BS EN ISO 6892-1:2019, ASTM E8/E8M-25 and ASTM A370-26.

Tensile testing from ambient to 300°C

A separate GAT entry covers temperatures from ambient to 300°C and forces from 2 kN to 200 kN under BS EN ISO 6892-2:2018 Method A and ASTM E21-20. The ambient entry’s 1200 kN upper force is not transferred to this temperature range.

Metallurgical testing

At GAT, grain size by comparison and intercept methods uses ASTM E112-25 and BS EN ISO 643:2024. Volume fraction uses ASTM E562-19e1. Graphite in iron uses ASTM A247-24 and ASTM E2567-16a(2023). Inclusion content uses ASTM E45-25 Methods A and D. Case depth uses BS EN ISO 18203:2026. Metallographic decarburisation uses ASTM E1077-14(2021). Jominy hardenability uses BS EN ISO 642:2024 and ASTM A255-20a.

Weldment testing to specified codes

The GAT weldment entry covers bend, fracture, hardness, impact, tensile and macro examination in accordance with specified welding codes. Listed references include ASME IX:2025, API 1104 22nd edition 2021 with Errata 1, AWS D1.1/D1.1M 25th edition 2025 and AWS D1.2/D1.2M 6th edition 2014 including May 2020 errata. Confirm the applicable code and examination. This does not establish unrestricted welding certification or general fracture-toughness testing.
